After graduating from college, Novak moved to Los Angeles to begin his career as a comedian. Working at clubs, Novak had his first live stand-up performance in October 2001 at the Hollywood Youth Hostel. Soon after, a BJ Novak appearance became a regular event at popular comedy clubs like The Improv. In 2003, Novak was named one of Variety’s Ten Comedians To Watch.
