In 1988, Armisen moved from New York to Chicago and began his career as drummer for the punk rock band, Trenchmouth. He also played background drums with Blue Man Group, and toured with David Shouse of Those Bastard Souls in 1997.
A rather distant transition, Armisen’s move from music to comedy happened with the 1998 short film Fred Armisen’s Guide to Music and South by Southwest, which featured his trip to the South by Southwest Festival as a music journalist. He then went on to do stand-up comedy, joining the cast of SNL as a featured player in 2002. In the 2004 season, he became a repertory cast member, where he has also done some supporting roles. A Fred Armisen appearance can be seen in movies such as Eurotrip, Deuce Bigalow: European Gigolo, Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy, and Deck the Halls. In 2007, while continuing to appear on SNL, he was also seen in the comedy The Ex and Quebec, where he was the lead character, as well as in the feature The Rocker. He has also created ThunderAnt, a comedy team.
Armisen maintained his attachment to music, directing music videos for bands such as The Helio Sequence. He also appeared in the Wilco documentary I Am Trying to Break Your Heart, as well as video segments on Blue Man Group’s How to be a Megastar Tour 2.0. He writes for Pitchfork Media from time to time, and plays musical instruments in sketches. Armisen is also famous for impersonating well known figures in the music world.
