Before the first Sacha Baron Cohen appearance on TV, he performed on-stage as part of the Cambridge University Amateur Dramatic Club. As a comedian, writer, and actor, Cohen popularized legendary comic characters Ali G, a hiphop gangsta wannabe, Borat, a Kazakh reporter, and Bruno, a gay Austrian fashion reporter.
Cohen is known for conducting interviews with decent-looking figures while posing as one of his characters for comic effect. As a result, his interviewees believe that the seeming interviews were true. For this comedic work, Cohen has garnered numerous Emmy nominations, an Oscar nomination for Best Adapted Screenplay, a BAFTA award, and a Golden Globe for Best Actor for his work in the feature film Borat: Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan.
A Sacha Baron Cohen appearance as Ali G can be seen in Madonna’s video “Music,” in the 2005 MTV Europe Music Awards, as well as in an a famous interview with David Beckham. He also made appearances in Curb Your Enthusiasm, Madagascar as the voice of King Julian, Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby, Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street, and the 2006 MTV Movie Awards and the 2006 British Comedy Awards.
Cohen makes it a point never to do interviews out of character, but in 2004, he did appear as himself on The Late Show with David Letterman, The Opie and Anthony Show, The Howard Stern Show, and others for the promotion of the upcoming season of his show on HBO. He was also interviewed on NPR’s All Things Considered and NPR’s Fresh Air.
Prior to Cohen’s work as Ali G, Borat, and Bruno, he hosted a weekly program on Windsor cable TV’s local broadcasts in the early 1990s. He also worked for a Swindon-based TV company where he made his first feature film appearance.
