Biography

Queen Latifah has broken through barriers as one of the few entertainers to claim a Grammy award, an Emmy nomination and an Academy Award nomination. The multi-hyphenate singer-rapper-actress-producer was born in Newark, New Jersey with the name Dana Owens. By the age of 19, Latifah released her first album called “All Hail the Queen” for Tommy Boy Records in 1989. Her rapping career took off immediately with praise from fans and critics, and her debut was followed by “Nature of a Sista” and “Black Reign.” She won a Grammy for the single “U.N.I.T.Y.” In 2004, Latifah changed her tune to jazz standards, again to critical acclaim.

Throughout this time, Latifah built a solid resume of film and TV work, beginning in 1991 with “Juice,” “Jungle Fever” and “House Party 2,” the long-running FOX sitcom “Living Single” and roles in “Set it Off” and “Living Out Loud.” The 2003 Oscars featured a Queen Latifah appearance as she received a supporting actress nomination for her role in the musical “Chicago.” Since then, Latifah has headlined the films “Bringing Down the House,” “Taxi” and “Beauty Shop.” In 2007, Latifah returned to the musical genre in the big-screen adaptation of the movie-turned-musical “Hairspray.”
