The multi-hyphenate singer-rapper-actress-producer was born in Newark, New Jersey with the name Dana Owens. By the age of 19, Latifah released her first album called “All Hail the Queen” for Tommy Boy Records in 1989. Her rapping career took off immediately with praise from fans and critics, and her debut was followed by “Nature of a Sista” and “Black Reign.” She won a Grammy for the single “U.N.I.T.Y.” In 2004, Latifah changed her tune to jazz standards, again to critical acclaim.
