Phil Donahue is best known as the creator and host of “The Phil Donahue Show,” the first tabloid talk show. The show had a 26-year run on national TV, its last episode airing in 1996.

The first Phil Donahue appearance on the broadcasting scene was in 1957 as a production assistant at KYW radio and television in Cleveland. He served as an announcer when the regular announcer didn’t show up. Soon after graduating, he had a brief stint as a bank check sorter in Albuquerque, New Mexico, but eventually moved back to entertainment, becoming program director for WABJ radio in Adrian, Michigan. Donahue then became a stringer for the CBS Evening News. He later worked as anchor of the morning newscast at WHIO-TV.

While hosting his own program, there was a regular Phil Donahue appearance on NBC’s The Today Show as a contributor for two years. He also co-hosted Pozner/Donahue with Soviet journalist Vladimir Posner, which aired both on CNBC and in syndication for three years.

In 2002, Donahue returned to television to host “Donahue” on MSNBC. In 2007, he became Executive Producer for the feature documentary film, “Body of War.” He also co-directed it with independent filmmaker Ellen Spiro.
