Biography

In the span of just a few years, Judd Apatow has become one of the most bankable writers, directors and producers in Hollywood, but the talented scribe spent years paying his dues before his recent success. A native of Syosset, New York, Apatow was obsessed with comedy from a young age and wrangled interviews with Steve Allen and Jerry Seinfeld on his high school radio show.

He moved to Los Angeles to work on his stand-up career and befriended Adam Sandler and Ben Stiller, which led to Apatow earning an Emmy as a writer and producer of Fox’s short-lived “The Ben Stiller Show.” He collected six more Emmy nominations for his work on HBO’s “The Larry Sanders Show.” That success helped Apatow develop and executive produce two shows of his own, “Freaks and Geeks” and “Undeclared,” both of which lasted one season despite strong critical praise.

Apatow’s box office breakthrough came as a producer on the Will Ferrell starrer “Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgandy,” which gave Apatow the clout to write and direct “The 40-Year-Old Virgin,” a sleeper hit starring Steve Carrell that grossed more than $177 million worldwide. Apatow struck paydirt again in 2007 with the smash comedy “Knocked Up,” which earned both critical and box office success. Apatow’s producing projects, including “Superbad” and “Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby,” also hit big.
