Born and raised in Dedham, Massachusetts, Richard learned the ins and outs of the home improvement business from his father, by working weekends and summers at the family plumbing and heating business. Today, Richard is a licensed master and journeyman plumber in the state of Massachusetts, where he continues to work for the business his father founded, Trethewey Bros. Inc. When he’s not busy working, Richard can also be seen on This Old House, as the shows expert plumbing and heating consultant. Trethewey has been an integral part of the This Old House team since 1979, making him the third longest series member behind Norm Abram and Russell Morash, the shows creator. Richard has also spent time as a team member on the This Old House spinoffs, Ask This Old House and Inside This Old House. In addition, Richard has also contributed to several This Old House home remodeling books and is a contributor to editorial section of This Old House Magazine.
