Born into a family of professional baseball players, the first Bill Lee appearance in professionally baseball was as a part of the 1968 Major League Amateur Draft, having been drafted in the 22nd round by the Boston Red Sox. He played for the team from 1969 to 1978 and for the Montreal Expos from 1979 to 1982.
Lee will be inducted into the Red Sox Hall of Fame in November 2008. He will also be inducted as record-holder for most games pitched by a left-hander in team history and the third-highest win total by a southpaw. In addition to success on the field, Lee has written four books and a 2006 documentary film entitled Spaceman in Cuba.
