Known for his intimidating defense, Bill Mazeroski spent his entire career from 1956 to 1972 with the Pittsburgh Pirates, helping the team clinch the 1960 and 1971 World Series titles. The 1960 World Series was exceptionally dramatic, as it ended with a home run, which remains the only Game 7 “walk-off” in World Series history. The ball was then put in the Hall of Fame for display. During his career, Mazeroski earned eight Gold Gloves and led the National League in assists nine times. He also holds the major league career record for double plays by a second baseman.
Mazeroski also spent seasons where his offensive contributions were highlighted, especially that of 1958, when he batted .275, hit a career best19 home runs, and had 68 RBIs. Though he was never known as a slugger, he managed to hit another decisive home run during the 1960 World Series. A portion of the brick left field wall from Forbes Field is now standing on the University of Pittsburgh campus as a memorial. On the other side is a softball field dedicated to Mazeroski.
In 2003, the Ohio Buckeye Local High School in Rayland honored Mazeroski by naming their new baseball field after him. They also placed a monument behind home plate in recognition. The following year, the Ohio Valley Athletic Conference honored him by electing him as an inaugural member of their Hall of Fame. He was also chosen by MLB to throw out the first pitch of the Home Run Derby and received a long standing ovation.
