Many people know him as the best pitcher in Cardinals history because of his outstanding fastball, sharp slider and curveball. Gibson did not only gain his fame on the mound, he was also considered one of the greatest hitting pitchers of all time.
In high school, Gibson was a standout for basketball and baseball. He played at Creighton University with a basketball scholarship, followed by some time with the Harlem Globetrotters and then he signed a contract to play baseball for the Cardinals. In 1962 he had the first of nine 200-strikeout seasons.
