In 1961, the first Carl Yastrzemski appearance in the major leagues brought with it tons of pressure: He was the successor to the position of Sox legend Ted Williams. Yastrzemski proved himself worthy of the position, and is widely regarded as a more dominant defensive player than Williams was, especially in playing off the “Green Monster,” Fenway Park’s infamous left field wall. As a left fielder for 12 years, Yastrzemski won seven Gold Gloves and led the league in assists seven times.
In 1963, Yastrzemski rose to fame as he won the American League batting championship and led the league in doubles and walks. His best season came in 1967, winning the American League Triple Crown with a record of .326 batting average, 44 home runs, and 121 RBIs, as well as being named Most Valuable Player. He also won the Hickok Belt as top professional athlete of the year and Sports Illustrated magazine’s “Sportsman of the Year” Award.
With his entire career as a Boston Red Sox, he is the team’s all-time leader in career RBIs, runs, hits, singles, doubles, total bases, and games played, and is second on the team’s list for home runs. Spending 23 years playing baseball, Yastrzemski is an 18-time All-Star, a member of the 3,000 hit club, and also the first AL player in that club to have over 400 home runs. He also ranks second on the all-time list for games played, and third for total at-bats.
In 1999, a Yastrzemski appearance ranked 72nd on The Sporting News’ list of the 100 Greatest Baseball Players. He was also a finalist to the Major League Baseball All-Century Team. The Red Sox retired his uniform #8 and elected him to the team’s Hall of Fame. He was also named to the Baseball Hall of Fame.
