Drafted in the fourth round by the Montreal Expos in 2000, Lee started his professional baseball career playing for Double A Harrisburg. In June 2002, the Expos traded him to the Cleveland Indians, and he pitched three games with the Akron Aeros before entering the Buffalo Bisons, the Triple A affiliate within the Cleveland farm system.
The first Cliff Lee appearance in the major leagues was in a start against the Minnesota Twins in 2002. Since his call up to the Indians, he has won at least 14 games in each of his first three full seasons and did more than 200 innings in 2005 and 2006. In 2005, he became a runner-up for the AL Cy Young Award.
In 2008, even with the Indians having a losing record, Lee started the season quite well, compiling a 22-2 record with a 2.36 ERA. He is only one of eight pitchers since 1920 to win 19 or more of his first 21 decisions. He earned distinctions such as the first Cleveland pitcher to win his first six starts since 1988. His first career shutout happened in April 2008, in a game against the Kansas City Royals, allowing just 3 hits and no walks. For his brilliant performance, he was named the American League Pitcher of the Month for April. Lee took part in his first All-Star game in 2008, as one of the starters.
In August 2008, Lee was again named American League Pitcher of the Month, winning his 22nd game the following month. This was the first time a pitcher won more than 20 games since 1990.
