Biography

In 1958, Perry was signed by the San Francisco Giants and spent the year with the St. Cloud, Minnesota team in Class A Northern League. The following year, he was promoted to the Class AA Corpus Christi Giants, where he remained until he got promoted to the Class AAA Tacoma Rainiers for the 1961 season. That year, he led the Pacific Coast League in wins and innings pitched. The following year, Perry was called up to the Major Leagues and appeared in 13 games. He returned to Tacoma for the rest of the year, and he was included in Bill James’ best minor league lineup of the 1960s.

During his 22 years in baseball, a Gaylord Perry appearance in the Major Leagues occurred with eight teams: the San Francisco Giants, Cleveland Indians, Texas Rangers, San Diego Padres, New York Yankees, Atlanta Braves, Seattle Mariners, and Kansas City Royals. Known more for his pitching than hitting (he was famed for his spitball), Perry was said to have joked about putting a man on the moon before he could hit a home run. However, on July 20, 1969, shortly after the Apollo 11 spacecraft landed on the moon, Perry hit his first home run.

A Gaylord Perry appearance in an All-Star game happened five times, and he was also the first pitcher to win the Cy Young Award in both the National and American leagues – in 1972 with the Cleveland Indians and in 1978 with the San Diego Padres. He and his brother Jim were the second-winningest brother combination in baseball history. And in May 1982, as a member of the Seattle Mariners, a Gaylord Perry appearance against the New York Yankees and a win made him the 15th member of the 300 win club.

In 1974, Perry published his autobiography, “Me and the Spitter.” In 1991, Perry was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame.
