Biography

Jim Abbott was born without a right hand, and undoubtedly he was told many times to give up on his dream of playing Major League Baseball. It’s hard enough for anyone to make it to the Big Leagues, but to overcome the challenge of playing with one hand is truly remarkable. Abbott grew up in Flint, Michigan, and developed into a star pitcher for the University of Michigan baseball team. He also won a gold medal as a member of the 1988 U.S. Olympic Team, and then became a first round selection by the California Angels. Remarkably, Abbott went directly from college to the Majors and never played a game of minor league baseball. He posted a 12-2 record in his rookie year, and in 1991 he won 18 games and finished third in the voting for the Cy Young Award as the best pitcher in the American League.

Before long people stopped talking about how remarkable it was that he could pitch and field with just one hand, and just started talking about what a great pitcher he was after he threw a no-hitter as a member of the New York Yankees. Abbott even picked up a couple of base hits while batting one-handed for the Milwaukee Brewers. Now retired, Abbott is a popular motivational speaker, and he certainly has a unique story of perseverance to tell.

TSE is ready to help you arrange for a Jim Abbott speaker appearance or Jim Abbott endorsement. We have years of experience setting up appearances by sports celebrities, and we can put that experience to work for you in the Jim Abbott appearance fee negotiations.
