After Philly, Bunning joined the Pittsburgh Pirates from 1968 through the middle of the 1969 season, and finished the 1969 season on the Los Angeles Dodgers. He returned to the Phillies in 1970 and retired the next year.

In 1958, Bunning pitched his first no-hitter for the Detroit Tigers against the Boston Red Sox. His second, this time for the Phillies, came in 1964, where his perfect game was the first in the National League in 84 years. He is one of only five players to throw a no-hitter in both leagues. As a result of his on-field accomplishment, there was a Jim Bunning appearance in seven All-Star Games. In 1996, Bunning was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame, and the Phillies retired his #14.

After his retirement from baseball, the next national Jim Bunning appearance was in politics. He began is political career by serving two years on the city council of Fort Thomas, Kentucky before running for and winning a seat in the Kentucky Senate as a republican. In 1986, Bunning won the Republican nomination in Kentucky’s Fourth District, and was reelected five more times. For four years starting in 1995, he became chairman of the House Ways and Means Subcommittee on Social Security.

Bunning’s first senate term came in 1998, with the Bunning-Bereuter-Blumenauer Flood Insurance Reform Act of 2004 as one of the bills he passed. In 2004, during his second term, he involved himself heavily in Congress’s investigation of steroid use in baseball.
