Many scouts have called him the best young catcher in baseball and he’s known to have one of the best swings of all time. In his 2005 season Mauer had 144 hits in 131 games. In 2006, he had a record .528 average over the first ten days in June alone.
Mauer also broke another record in 2006, as the first catcher to lead both leagues in batting average. He was the first American League catcher to win the batting title, with his .347 average. He was awarded his first Silver Slugger award that year as well.
In high school, Mauer grew accustomed to his future in the spot light, being awarded multiple titles such as ESPN’s All-American, Parade and USA Today’s Player of the Year and Gatorade’s National Player of the Year. At the end of his high school career, he was offered a scholarship to Florida State which he denied to play professionally.
