From humble beginnings in the small town of Bonham, Texas, Joe Morgan rose through the ranks of baseball before becoming a notable commentator for ESPN. At 19, Morgan was signed by the Houston Colt .45’s, who later became the Houston Astros. In 1971, he was traded to the Cincinnati Reds and truly came into his own. The second baseman helped propel the Reds to back-to-back World Series victories in 1975 and 1976 and was also voted National League MVP both of those years. He returned to the Astros for a year in 1980 and then spent seasons with the San Francisco Giants, Philadelphia Phillies and Oakland Athletics before retiring in 1984. Morgan was inducted into both the National Baseball Hall of Fame (with a whopping 81.8% vote for his first ballot appearance) and the Cincinnati Reds Hall of Fame. His broadcasting career began with the Reds in 1985, and the former player made the jump to national broadcasts at ABC, NBC and currently ESPN.
