John Smoltz, an Atlanta Braves player since 1988, is the only pitcher in Major League history to top both 200 wins and 150 saves. He was the recipient of the Cy Young Award in 1996, as well as the Silver Slugger award for his batting. In 2002, he succeeded in being the second pitcher in history to have both a 20-win season and a season with 50 saves. His fastball has been recorded to be thrown at 101 MPH.

In 2000 Smoltz had surgery to repair his elbow, causing him to miss the season. In 2002, he came back strong breaking the National League record with 55 saves. In the seasons that followed, he continued improving and evolving. In 2006, he was tied for the most National League wins and third for strikeouts.
