Biography

Not many players are drafted by two different teams, in two different sports but Kirk Gibson is one of those players who were. He played both football and baseball in college and was drafted by the Detroit Tigers and St. Louis Cardinals; he ultimately chose to play baseball. He played right field for the Tigers and helped them to the World Series in 1984, which they ended up winning. After becoming an immediate free agent in 1988, Gibson signed with the Los Angeles Dodgers.

During the 1988 World Series, Kirk Gibson hit a home-run that to this day is still talked about. Although he had injured his leg during the league championship series and wasn’t expected to play, he came up to pinch hit during game 1. He got to full count during his at bat and hit a home run over the right field fence; his home run helped the dodgers win that game when fans had been leaving the stadium because they thought the team would lose.

Kirk Gibson is the only MVP that has never played in an All-Star game, he was invited twice but declined to play each time. In 1995 he announced that he would retire from baseball, he became a TV analyst for the Tigers for five seasons. He was then the Tigers bench coach from 2003-2005, in 2005 he was moved to be their hitting coach. At the start of the 2007 season he was the Arizona Diamondbacks bench coach.
