Lance Berkman was a standout player in college, and, in 1997, was named National College Player of the Year and a first team All-America by Collegiate Basketball Magazine, Baseball America, and The Sporting News. Berkman’s 41 home runs in 1997 ranked third in NCAA history.
The first professional Lance Berkman appearance after being drafted by the Houston Astros was with their “A” minor league affiliate, Kissimmee. In 1998, he was promoted to class “AA” Jackson and then to “AAA” New Orleans Zephyris in the mid-season. In 1999, Berkman made his debut in the Houston Astros lineup.
Since ascending to the majors, Berkman has been one of the most successful switch hitters in league history. He’s one of only two switch hitters to ever have 40 or more homeruns in multiple seasons (the other being the legendary Mickey Mantle).
