Biography

A former outfielder for teams such as the Baltimore Orioles, Cleveland Indians, Kansas City Royals and New York Yankees, Lou Piniella is now the manager of the Chicago Cubs. Piniella played in his first major league game at the age of 21 with the Orioles and played his second season with the Indians. While playing with the Kansas City Royals, he was the first player to come to bat in the team’s history. In 1969 Lou was the American League’s Rookie of the year. After playing for the Royals, he joined the New York Yankees for 11 seasons in which they won 5 AL East Titles, 5 AL Pennants and 2 World Series.

After Piniella retired as a player, he decided to become a manager. His first job as a manager was with the New York Yankees from 1986 to 1988 and then with the Cincinnati Reds in which they won the 1990 World Series against the Oakland Athletics. While managing the Seattle Mariners from 1993-2002, he was named AL Manager of the Year in 1995 and 2001. He is the only manager in Mariners history to have a winning record with the team.

Lou Piniella also managed the Tampa Bay Devil Rays, where they had a franchise record of winning 70 games. In September of 2005 he stepped down as manager and in 2006 signed to manage the Chicago Cubs for three years. Piniella is one of the most ejected managers only behind Cardinals manager Tony La Russa.
