Following his father’s footsteps at an early age, Luis Tiant joined both the local Little and Juvenile baseball leagues until he played for the Havana team. He was eventually picked up for the Cuban Juvenile League All-Star team in 1957. Tiant’s ability immediately impressed Bobby Avila, a former Cleveland Indians All-Star who was scouting for talent in Cuba. Tiant was recommended to the Mexico City Tigers of the Mexican League. For the next three years, there was a Luis Tiant appearance with the Tigers and the Havana Sugar Kings in the International League.
Tiant’s success in the minor leagues captured the eye of a number of major league clubs. He made it to the majors in 1964 and began pitching for the Cleveland Indians. There was also a Luis Tiant appearance with the Minnesota Twins, Boston Red Sox, New York Yankees, Pittsburgh Pirates, and the California Angels.
