Although he was originally signed by the Atlanta Braves, the first Mickey Rivers appearance in Major League Baseball was with the California Angels in 1970. He stayed with the Angels until 1975, leading the league in triples and reaching a career-high 70 bases.
Rivers was traded to the New York Yankees for the 1976 season and he continued to excel. That year, he was selected for the All-Star Team. He also placed third in the MVP voting and was named an outfielder on The Sporting News AL All-Star team. The Mickey Rivers appearance with the Yankees helped the team win back-to-back World Series titles in 1977 and 1978.
