The first Rich Harden appearance in the MLB was during the 2000 MLB Draft, where he was drafted by the Oakland Athletics in the 17th round. The following year, Harden led all Division I Junior College pitchers, and his ERA was the fifth lowest in the nation. His professional career in A Ball included a Rich Harden appearance with the Vancouver Canadians and Visalia Oaks. With his impressive resume, Harden was promoted to the Midland RockHounds of the Double-A. He also played for Midland and Sacramento River Cats of the Triple-A.
Harden began his Major League career in Oakland. Although he dealt with a number of injuries, he always rebounded impressively, recording over 100 strikeouts in all of his non-injury plagued complete years.
On July 8, 2008, Harden was traded to the division-leading cubs to provide them with more pitching firepower. In his first eight games with the cubs, he earned only one loss and recorded 70 strikeouts.
