In 1979 he was named National League Rookie of the Year and was the first of four consecutive Rookies of the Year for the Los Angeles Dodgers. After an altercation with Dodgers manager Tommy Lasorda in 1981, Sutcliffe was traded to the Cleveland Indians. Over the next two seasons for the Indians, Rick won 31 games and in 1982 led the American League in earned run average.
Since he had been struggling, in mid-1984 the Indians traded Sutcliffe to the Chicago Cubs where he rebounded and won 16 games and helped them to the division championship. After suffering from injuries in 1990 and 1991, the Cubs decided not to re-sign Rick, instead he signed with the Baltimore Orioles and then in 1994 he ended his career with the St.Louis Cardinals.
Following his retirement, Rick Sutcliffe became a commentator for the San Diego Padres as well as ESPN. He was also a minor league pitching coach for the Padres for a few seasons.
