Dempster’s professional baseball career includes playing for the Florida Marlins from 1998 to 2002 and the Cincinnati Reds from 2002 to 2003. Since 2004, any Ryan Dempster appearance has been as a pitcher for the Chicago Cubs.
Dempster has one of the best save percentages of any active pitcher in the league. He is also the only Cub, and one of only three players ever, to start a game and have at least 30 saves in one season. He was also named to the All-Star team twice, the first time in 2000 with the Marlins, and second time in 2008 with the Cubs.
