Remarkably difficult to strike out (he only struck out 434 times in nearly 10,000 at bats), Tony Gwynn collected 3,141 hits in his 20-year career with the San Diego Padres. Gwynn stood out in baseball and basketball at San Diego State University¬ - both the Padres and the Los Angeles Clippers of the NBA drafted him. Gwynn opted for baseball and joined the Padres, and he’s still known as “Mr. Padre” and has a street named in his honor outside of PETCO Park. An amazing contact hitter, Tony Gwynn hit .394 in 1994 and nearly became the first player to hit .400 since Ted Williams did it in 1941. He also had a fair amount of speed early in his career, and once stole five bases in one game and he ended his career with more than 300 steals. The 16-time All-Star and eight-time National League batting champ was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame in 2007.
