Prior to joining the major league, Wade Boggs played in the minor league, where he was part of the longest game in professional baseball history as a member of the Pawtucket Red Sox against the Rochester Red Wings in 1981.

In 1982, Boggs joined the Boston Red Sox and won five batting titles starting in 1983. In 1993, a Wade Boggs appearance with the New York Yankees helped the team to their first World Series title in 18 years. In 1998, he signed with the Tampa Bay Devil Rays and collected his 3,000th hit the following year, making him the only member of the 3,000-hit club whose 3,000th hit was a home run.

Boggs’ skill in hitting made him a recurrent contender for the American League batting titles. In 2004, he was elected to the Red Sox Hall of Fame and the Baseball Hall of Fame in 2005. He had 12 straight All-Star appearances over his career, placing him third in number of consecutive appearances as a third baseman. In 1987, his most successful season, Boggs set career highs in HR, RBI, and slugging percentage. During that season, he batted .363 and held a .461 OBP, which both led the league.

In 1999, a Wade Boggs appearance on The Sporting News list of the 100 Greatest Baseball Players placed him at 95th. He was also a nominee for the Major League Baseball All-Century Team.
