Considered to be one of the best players of all time, Willie Mays ended his 22 year career in the major leagues with 660 homeruns and was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1979, his first year of eligibility. Mays was named MVP twice and made appearances in a record, 24 All-Star games. Recently, at the 2007 All-Star game, Mays was given a special tribute for all of his legendary contributions to baseball, he also threw the ceremonial first pitch at the game.
Willie Mays was a fan favorite who made the game of baseball look fun. He was extremely skillful in all areas of the sport, hitting, running and most of all, fielding. Even when he was one of the most recognizable players, Mays would still play stickball in the streets with children who stood outside of his Harlem boarding house.
