Bill Cartwright was a consensus second team all-American in 1977 and 1979. He led San Francisco to three NCAA tournament appearances, including the two Sweet Sixteens. He graduated as the all-time leading scorer for the USF Dons.

The first Bill Cartwright appearance in the NBA was with the New York Knicks. He was the third overall pick in the 1979 NBA Draft. There was also a Bill Cartwright appearance in the 1979 to 1980 NBA All-Star Game, as well as appearances with the Chicago Bulls and the Seattle Supersonics.

A few years after his retirement, Cartwright became an assistant coach to the Bulls’ Phil Jackson and helped them win the NBA titles in 1997 and 1998. He became the team’s head coach in 2002 and lasted 14 games into the 2003 to 2004 season. In 2004, he also served as assistant coach on the New Jersey Nets, and in June 2008, he became an assistant coach on the Phoenix Suns.
