Before leaving his high school, Pettit led its basketball team to its first state championship in more than 20 years. He then went on to college at LSU, where he was a three-time All-Southeastern Conference selection and a two-time All-American. In his third year, a Bob Pettit appearance led the Tigers to their second SEC Title and their first NCAA Final Four, where he was honored with an All-American title. The following year, the team won the SEC Championship again, and Pettit received the same awards. He was also selected to the All-SEC team three times. In 1954, the Tigers retired his number 50, making him the first Tiger athlete in any sport to have this honor.
The first Bob Pettit appearance in the NBA in 1954 helped him garnered accolades such as NBA Rookie of the Year. He went on to become a four-time All-Star MVP, two-time NBA MVP, and two-time NBA Scoring Champion. His jersey number was also retired by the Atlanta Hawks.
