Despite being a star basketball player, a Calvin Murphy appearance never led to a national championship. However, Murphy does have a national championship to his credit. As an 8th grader, in 1963, Murphy won a national baton twirling championship. In fact, his impressive reputation as a baton twirler earned him invitations to perform at major sporting events and the 1964 New York World’s Fair. And even at the height of his basketball success – 1977 – Murphy won the Texas State Men’s Twirling Championship.

Of course, Murphy is probably better known for his successes on the hardwood, and he’d surely prefer it that way. As a 5’9” guard, Murphy was considered quite small, but that didn’t stop him from becoming one of the most prolific scorers in NCAA and NBA basketball history. His 33.1 points per game average while attending Niagara University ranks him fourth best in NCAA history, and Murphy still holds the NBA’s consecutive free throw record.
