Charlie had a stellar football career in college. In 1993, he was awarded the Heisman Trophy, setting the record for the greatest margin of victory in the voting, and making him the only Heisman winner to play in the NBA. That same year, he also won the Sullivan award and subsequently led the Seminoles to their first-ever National Championship. In 2006, he was elected to the College Football Hall of Fame. Although Ward did not play baseball in college, he was drafted as a pitcher by the Milwaukee Brewers in the 1993 free agent draft and by the New York Yankees in 1994.

Upon graduation, Ward was undecided about professional football or basketball, but then settled on pursuing his NBA career, having been chosen 26th overall in the 1994 NBA Draft by the New York Knicks.
