On February 7, 1970, a Dan Issel appearance for the University of Kentucky Wildcats featured the star forward scoring 53 points in a 120-85 victory over Mississippi. That record stood for nearly four decades, only falling as recently as January of 2009 when Jodie Meeks scored 54.
That game, however, was just one in a long line of unmatched Dan Issel appearances for the University of Kentucky and in the NBA. Issel’s college basketball career, under legendary coach Adolph Rupp, featured two All American appearances and a scoring average of 25.7 points per game.
Upon graduation, Issel elected to join the ABA. In only his first season, he lef the ABA in scoring and was named Rookie of the Year. He followed that season by being named to the All-ABA First Team the next season, and he was named MVP of the 1972 ABA All-Star Game. In 1975, Issel helped his Colonels to the ABA title.
When the ABA and NBA merged for the 1976-77 season, Issel became part of the Denver Nuggets. As early as 1977, there was a Dan Issel appearance in the NBA All-Star Game. His total professional points (combining the ABA and NBA) is over 27,000, making him one of the highest scoring professional players in the history of the game.
