Only a handful of athletes can be instantly recognized by a nickname, and David Robinson, “The Admiral,” is one of the select few. He earned his nickname after attending the U.S. Naval Academy, and he earned a world of respect for fulfilling his service duties before taking the big money offered by the NBA. Once he did join the San Antonio Spurs, he helped the team go from 21-61 before he got there to 56-26 in his first season with the team. He was named the NBA Rookie of the Year in 1990, the league’s MVP in 1995 and during his career he appeared in 10 NBA All-Star Games. The addition of Tim Duncan to the Spurs in 1998 proved to be the tipping point that sent the team to the 1999 NBA Finals, where they blasted the New York Knicks in five games. The Spurs and David Robinson won another NBA title in 2003, after which The Admiral decided to call it a career. The two-time Olympic gold medal winner accumulated more awards and honors than almost any other player in NBA history, but that’s not what David Robinson is all about. Because of his tireless community involvement and charitable work, the NBA renamed its charitable contributions award to be the David Robinson Plaque, which honors the winner for “following the standard set by NBA Legend David Robinson, who improved the community piece by piece.”
