Dwight Howard was born to a highly athletic family. His father, a Georgia State Trooper, serves as Athletic Director of Southwest Atlanta Christian Academy, and Howard’s mother was on the inaugural women’s basketball team at Morris Brown College. From an early age Howard took a liking to basketball, and by eighth grade, he resolved to be selected as the number one pick in the NBA Draft. In 2004, Howard’s resolution came true – there was a Dwight Howard appearance as the number one pick in the NBA Draft by the Orlando Magic, selecting the young Howard right out of high school over the seasoned UConn senior Emeka Okafor.
In his first season with the Magic, Howard set numerous NBA records. He finished his rookie season averaging 12 points per game and 10 rebounds per game. He became the youngest player in NBA history to average a double double in the regular season, became the youngest player to average at least 10 rebounds in a season, and the youngest NBAer to record at least 20 rebounds in a game.
Howard has continued improving since his rookie campaign. Now a full-fledged center, Howard is the leader of the Orlando Magic, a leading rebounder in the league, and, in 2009, Howard was named the NBA Defensive Player of the Year.
