Although today Jerry Colangelo is one of the most prominent business men in Phoenix, the first Jerry Colangelo appearance in Arizona was as a poor college graduate with no more than $200 in his pocket. Colangelo’s passion for sports actually began in high school, where he was a basketball and baseball star for Bloom Township High School. He was similarly successful in college, becoming the captain of his University of Illinois basketball team. But Colangelo was not meant to be a professional athlete. Instead, he was destined to run the teams.

As early as 1968, Colangelo was made the first general manager of the expansion Phoenix Suns. In less than 10 years, he would have his young expansion team in the NBA Finals, though he has not, to this point, managed to bring his Suns to an NBA Championship.

Colangelo has, however, helped other teams to championships. In 1998, Colangelo brought Major League Baseball to Arizona as one of the founders of the Arizona Diamondbacks. And by 2001, the Diamondbacks had one their first world series. Then, in 2008, as managing director of USA Basketball, Colangelo helped build the team that Duke head coach Mike Krzyzewski would take to Beijing to win the Summer Olympic Games.
