Title: College Basketball CoachShortly after graduating from college, John Chaney spent time in the Eastern Professional Basketball League. In 1963, he coached his first team, which was composed of middle schoolers. He moved to high school, posting a 63-23 record, and finally to college basketball.
A John Chaney appearance on the collegiate sidelines began with Division II Cheyney State, where he posted a 232-56 record. In 1978, he led his team to a national title. After spending 10 years at Cheyney, Chaney moved on to Division I Temple in Philadelphia, where he became famous for his strictness as a coach, with practices at six in the morning, match-up zone defense, and tough non-conference scheduling.
Chaney helped Temple to 17 NCAA tournament appearances, with his 1987 to 1988 Owls team entering the NCAA tournament as number one in the country.
December 20, 2004 – a Temple win over Princeton – marked the 1,000th John Chaney appearance on the sidelines, becoming the fifth active coach and 19th all-time to achieve the feat.
