Although when hearing the name John Thompson, Jr. most people don’t think of NBA Championship, Thompson can actually proudly claim two such titles during his brief NBA career with the Boston Celtics. Thompson served as backup center for Bill Russell for two seasons, both of which brought NBA titles.

However, Thompson’s crowning hardwood achievements wouldn’t come as a player. Instead, the most important John Thompson, Jr. appearance came as head coach of the Georgetown University Hoyas. There, Thompson led his Hoyas to 24 postseason appearances, including 20 in the NCAA tournament. His teams made it to three Final Fours, and he directed them to a National Championship in 1984 (and just barely missed a repeat the next year by losing to heavy underdog Villanove).
