Biography

Although when hearing the name John Thompson, Jr. most people don’t think of NBA Championship, Thompson can actually proudly claim two such titles during his brief NBA career with the Boston Celtics. Thompson served as backup center for Bill Russell for two seasons, both of which brought NBA titles.

However, Thompson’s crowning hardwood achievements wouldn’t come as a player. Instead, the most important John Thompson, Jr. appearance came as head coach of the Georgetown University Hoyas. There, Thompson led his Hoyas to 24 postseason appearances, including 20 in the NCAA tournament. His teams made it to three Final Fours, and he directed them to a National Championship in 1984 (and just barely missed a repeat the next year by losing to heavy underdog Villanove). The John Thompson, Jr. appearance cutting down the nets in Seattle to with the 1984 title marked the first time an African-American head coach directed his team to the National Championship.

John Thompson, Jr. Speaker

Today, the most common John Thompson, Jr. speaker appearance is as a commentator for both professional and collegiate basketball games. Thompson is also host of the John Thompson Show, a sports talk show on ESPN 980 in Washington, DC.

John Thompson, Jr. Appearance

Today, you can regularly see a John Thompson, Jr. appearance at Georgetown basketball games, as he is still heavily involved in the program. In addition, the Hoyas are currently led by Thompson’s eldest son, John Thompson III.

John Thompson, Jr. Endorsement

Although many people think John Thompson III had a John Thompson, Jr. endorsement in order to become head coach, Thompson III has already taken the Hoyas back to the Final Four, and many people realize that, even if he did receive an endorsement from his father, the younger Thompson knows what he’s doing most likely because he spent so many years learning from one of the best coaches in the history of the game.
