One of the greatest players to ever pick up a basketball and one of the best clutch performers in the history of sports, Larry Bird has an incredible story to tell. Surprisingly, five players were taken ahead of “Larry Legend” in the 1978 NBA Draft, and that worked out great for the Boston Celtics.
Bird decided to remain at Indiana State to play his senior season and joined the Celtics the next year. He was named the league’s Rookie of the Year for the 1979-80 season and was voted onto the Eastern Conference All-Star team (an honor he received each of his 12 full seasons in the NBA). In the 1980–81 season, Bird led the Celtics to victory in the NBA Finals, his first of three championships.
Both as a college player and NBA star, Larry Bird was known for his great rivalry with Magic Johnson. Bird’s humble roots (which affectionately earned him the nickname “the hick from French lick”), strong work ethic and straight-shooting style served him well in the NBA. Teammates have frequently commented that he elevated their level of performance through his selfless play and leadership.
In 1992, Bird joined his friend and frequent rival Magic Johnson along with other NBA stars to play for the United States in the Barcelona Olympics. Soon after the “Dream Team” won the gold medal, Bird announced he was retiring from the NBA. He of course is now a member of the Basketball Hall of Fame and currently works in the front office of the Indiana Pacers.
