A former basketball coach at St. John’s University, a Lou Carnesecca appearance on the sidelines led the Redmen to 526 wins and 200 losses over 24 seasons from 1965 to 1970 and from 1973 to 1992. He managed to reach the post-season in every season he coached the team, including making the Final Four in 1985. “Looie,” as he is popularly called by fans and by the media, was a recipient of the 1983 National Coach of the Year award and also received the same award in 1985 by the US Basketball Writers Association.
In addition to coaching St. John’s, Carnesecca also coached his high school alma mater, St. Ann’s, as well as the New York Nets of the defunct American Basketball Association in the early 1970s.
In 1992, Carnesecca was inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame, and the Century Hall 101 Hall of Fame in 2007.
