Sometimes overlooked from the era of Michael Jordan, Larry Bird and Magic Johnson are players like Mark Aguirre, who for more than a decade was one of the NBA’s top scorers and most entertaining players. A superstar at DePaul University, Aguirre won countless awards as a college player and helped take the Demons to the Final Four, where they fell to Larry Bird and his Indiana State team. The Dallas Mavericks made Aguirre the #1 overall pick in the 1981 NBA Draft, and he played for the Mavs for eight years before moving on to play for the Detroit Pistons and Los Angeles Clippers. A three-time NBA All-Star, Aguirre helped make the Mavs a respectable team and turned them from the league’s laughingstock to a playoff-caliber team. He scored nearly 20,000 points in his NBA career, highlighted by the 1983-84 season for the Mavericks when he averaged an incredible 29.5 points per game. Aguirre won a pair of NBA titles with the Pistons and is now an assistant coach with the New York Knicks.
