Although Moses Malone was offered a scholarship to play college basketball at the University of Maryland, there was never a Moses Malone appearance on the NCAA hardwood because he opted, instead, to join the ABA’s Utah Stars directly out of high school. Malone would go on to have one of the most successful prep-to-pro careers in history.
Although Malone started in the ABA, the NBA-ABA merger happened only two years later, and he was picked up by the Portland Trail Blazers in the ABA Dispersal Draft. However, Malone never played in Portland. Instead, he was traded to the Buffalo Braves. Yet, after only two games, Buffalo traded him to the Houston Rockets. But don’t worry… Malone found a home in Houston. He became a rebounding machine, averaging 13.2 points per game and an impressive 13.1 rebounds in his first full NBA season.
Malone’s NBA career went on to include 12 consecutive All-Star Game appearances. In what would have been only his first NBA season had Malone chosen to attend college, he instead won the NBA’s Most Valuable Player Award by averaging 24.8 points per game and 17.6 rebounds. He also established the league record for offensive rebounds in a season with 587.
While Malone helped the Rockets immensely – even winning the league MVP in his final season with the Rockets – he was traded, for the 1982-83 season, to the Philadelphia 76ers. In his first season with the 6ers, Malone won the league MVP for a second consecutive time and helped Philadelphia to the NBA Championship.
