Title: College Basketball CoachHaving been a basketball player in college, Pete Carril was an all-state selection for Pennsylvania in the 1948 season. After graduation, he became a high school teacher and coach for 12 seasons at Easton High School and Reading High School.
Best known for coaching Princeton University between 1967 and 1996, where his 514-261 record was the best of any coach in Ivy League basketball history, a Pete Carril appearance was the only coach to win 500 games without the benefit of athletic scholarships for his players. His 29 years of coaching career boasted of 13 Ivy League championships, 11 NCAA berths, and two NIT bids, one of which led to an NIT championship for Princeton in 1975.
Known for his strategies involving defense, his teams were first in the nation in scoring defense for 14 of his final 15 seasons, with eight in a row, from 1988 to 1996. “Princeton offense” was his legacy, a slow, low-scoring process accompanied with passes, movement without the ball, and back-door cuts.
In 1997, Carril was enshrined in the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame.
