Rebecca Lobo remains one of the best known female basketball players to ever take to the court. Born in Massachusetts, the 6-foot-4 center played college ball on the legendary University of Connecticut Huskies team, whom she led to the 1995 National Championships to cap off an undefeated season. While at UConn, Lobo won the Naismith and College Player of the Year Awards. In 1996, Lobo was a member of the gold medal-winning U.S. women’s basketball team at the Olympic Games in Atlanta. The next year Lobo was drafted to play in the inaugural season of the WNBA. She played with the New York Liberty for her first five seasons and concluded her career with the Connecticut Sun before retiring in 2003. Lobo married Steve Rushin, a former writer for Sports Illustrated, and has two daughters. She now works as a commentator for ESPN and, along with her mother, co-authored a book about her mother’s fight against breast cancer called “The Home Team.”
