When it comes to pure basketball talent, Rick Barry really had no equal on the court. Nicknamed “The Greyhound” because of his lanky frame and quick moves, Barry could do it all – rebounding, scoring, passing and defense. After playing his college ball at the University of Miami, the San Francisco (now Golden State) Warriors took the small forward as the number two overall pick in the 1965 draft. Barry made an instant impact on what had previously been a pretty dreadful team. In his first season in the NBA, Barry helped the Warriors double their win total and he was rewarded with the NBA Rookie of the Year title. Barry eventually turned the Warriors into championship contenders, and he was named the NBA Finals MVP in 1975 when Golden State upset the Washington Bullets. A knee injury ultimately cut Barry’s career short, but his status is secure as one of the best players in the history of both the NBA and the ABA. He is now a radio and TV broadcaster, an avid golfer and the father of four son, including NBA player Brent Barry and ESPN analyst Jon Barry.
