Only one person in the world can claim to be involved, in some direct way with the team, with each of the Boston Celtics’ 17 NBA championships. That man is Tom Heinsohn.

Heinsohn began his playing career near the Celtics as a scholarship player at Holy Cross. He would go on the become the school’s all-time leading scorer, including a school record 51 points he scored in a game against city-rival Boston College.

After college, the first Tom Heinsohn appearance in the NBA took place in 1956. That year, Heinsohn played in the NBA All-Star Game and was named the NBA Rookie of the Year. He would go on to be a part of the Celtics teams that won eight NBA titles in nine years, and only Bill Russell and Sam Jones have more championship rings than him.

After retiring as a play, Heinsohn took the reins as Celtics head coach in 1969. He would go on to lead the C’s to a 427-263 overall record during his tenure, including the 1976 NBA title.
