The first Vern Mikkelsen appearance in a college basketball game came at the age of 16. By the time he was a senior at Hamline University, Mikkelsen would become an All American, thus marking the beginning of one of the NBA’s earliest dominant forwards.
After graduating from Hamline, Mikkelsen joined the Minneapolis Lakers. Alongside George Mikan and Jim Pollard, the trio formed one of the best frontcourts in basketball history. The three big men helped lead the Lakers to five NBA titles from 1949 to 1954.
Mikkelsen played in six NBA All-Star Games and was named to the All-NBA Second Team four times during his ten season career. Of a possible 800 games during his career, Mikkelsen played in a whopping 798 games, making him one of the NBA’s true Iron Men.
