Boxer Leon Spinks had a roller coaster career that hit the highest peaks but also dipped into some low valleys, but through it all he continued to fight. Born in St. Louis, Spinks enjoyed an incredible rise to stardom after winning a gold medal at the 1976 Olympics as part of a U.S. team that included Sugar Ray Leonard. Spinks has his first pro fight in 1977 and by the following year he was the #1 contender and he earned a title shot against the great, although aging, Muhammad Ali.

Spinks scored a shocking victory over Ali and in only his eighth career fight he was the world champion in the heavyweight division. Ali ended up taking the title back from Spinks later that year but no one can ever take away Spinks’ first win over the great champion. And when Leon’s younger brother, Michael Spinks, became heavyweight champion in 1985 the two became the first brothers to be champions of that division. Since retiring from boxing in 1995, Spinks has worked with troubled youth and also helped train his son, Cory Spinks, one of the top fighters in the welterweight division.
