Along with his older brother Leon, Michael Spinks was one of the most popular and successful fighters of the late 1970s and 1980s. While Leon Spinks is famous for defeating Muhammad Ali, Michael Spinks was probably a better all-around fighter. After taking a gold medal in the 1976 Summer Olympics in Montreal, Spinks got off to a quick start as a pro and soon became the #1 contender. He then took the light heavyweight crown and set his sights on the IBF heavyweight title. In perhaps the biggest fight of his career against Larry Holmes, Spinks won a 15-round decision and became heavyweight champion of the world. Then Spinks suffered his only defeat against 31 victories when Mike Tyson knocked him out in 1988. Spinks retired after that fight. Now a member of the International Boxing Hall of Fame, Spinks works as a boxing trainer.
